May 15, 2018 (916) 651-4017 senator.monning@senate.ca.gov Senator Monning Issues a Statement on Court Action Against the End of Life Option Act (SACRAMENTO, CA) – Senator Bill Monning (D-Carmel) issued the following statement on the Riverside County Superior Court decision issued earlier today invalidating the End of Life Option Act: “I am extremely shocked and distressed that a group seeking to overturn the End of Life Option Act was able to court shop and find a sympathetic judge who would deny terminally ill Californians the right to end their lives on their owns terms, consistent with carefully crafted requirements. The enactment of this historic piece of legislation is within the scope of the special session and I am in discussions with both the Attorney General’s Office and the Governor’s Office about appealing the decision made by the judge. There has been overwhelming public support for this fundamental human right, and I am committed to ensuring that the End of Life Option Act remains a legal option for terminally ill Californians.” Website of Senator Bill Monning: http://sd17.senate.ca.gov/ # # # Senator Monning was elected in 2012 to represent the 17th Senate District, which includes all of San Luis Obispo and Santa Cruz counties, and portions of Monterey and Santa Clara counties.
